Don’t pay for the monitoring company, its not worth it. Get your own alarm system installed by someone and tell your neighbours you have it and to call you if it goes off when you aren’t home. You will save money not having the monitors. Also be sure and tell your insurance company you have it, they will reduce your premium.
The one answer is right, you will save money without the monitoring and have lower insurance rates… BUT I completely disagree that Monitoring isn’t worth it. Our companies monitoring costs are only $240 a year for residential. $20 a month, big deal. And keep in mind you save money on your insurance *because* you ARE monitored. One big advantage of having a monitored alarm system is for fire purposes. If you’re not home and a fire starts, who is going to dispatch the fire department right away? Surely not your neighbors because they may not know the difference in sound between a burg and fire alarm. You can’t always rely on your neighbors anyways… I’m sure they have jobs to go to also.
As for your actual question, I would suggest you allow a company to install the system. It will cost you more but its professionally installed and comes with a warranty. Its quite a pain in the butt to do it yourself. If you’re really handy you could do it but the system still needs to be programmed which would require a service technician.
