Thinking of going with a DIY installation of a wireless alarm system? Can a regular Joe like myself do this?

The company who supplies and offers the monitoring gives free support over the phone and assists you that way in the installation process. They tell me that anyone can install these with their assistance but I am wanting some objective perspective on this. I have a landline for non-voice use. Alarm etc. Can I use a non traditional phone service like Vonage?

Are there other companies? I pay about $30 a month with ATT. It seems ridiculous. Our main landline is with the cable company but they cant add this line since it is electric driven and the alarm needs to be on regardless of the electrical service. Any ideas? Would I save $$? Thanks!
