What alarm system can I get for my home and not have it hooked up to a service?

I have a landline for non-voice use. Alarm etc. Can I use a non traditional phone service like Vonage?

Are there other companies? I pay about $30 a month with ATT. It seems ridiculous. Our main landline is with the cable company but they cant add this line since it is electric driven and the alarm needs to be on regardless of the electrical service. Any ideas? Would I save $$? Thanks!
